Work has been taking place on the surface since 3am and the news that Strathclyde’s finest have pulled the plug will come as a huge disappointment. The heavy snowfall overnight (and the prospect of more to come) made the decision inevitable.
Quite apart from the treacherous surfaces close to Fir Park the risk to travelling fans (the A8 was closed at Harthill for a while this morning) could not be justified.
The foreign officials will have to return to warmer climes without experiencing the joys of the Referee’s accommodation in Motherwell and the Sky Sports crews can dismantle their equipment. A late call off is the exactly what the club had hoped to avoid and there will be a considerable financial hit as the loss of corporate revenue and other expenses mount up.
No new date has been set for the fixture and we’ll have to hope that the game against Kilmarnock gets the go ahead next Saturday.
