The club switched to the familiar colour just before the first world war but before then blue was the colour of the shirts. Many fans with a knowledge of the history have argued that we should have a strip that acknowledged the early days.
The kit can be pre-ordered now from Motherwell Direct and it will be available in the club shop from June 8. The adult shirt will cost £40 for the short sleeved version and the shorts can be had for £20.
Fans' reaction has been very positive and we can expect to see many examples as the club embark on the upcoming European tour.
Alan Provan said on the MFC official website, “The idea was to use the original blue, or as close to it as possible, whilst maintaining the key colours of Claret and Amber that we changed to nearly 100 years ago. We saw several draft designs before deciding on this one. Even after the graphics had been agreed we still had to wait for the finished sample to arrive.
“When it did, everyone at the Club was absolutely delighted with the result. I believe it’s one of the most striking kits we have been involved with here at Fir Park."
The kit is officially the third strip but if the clamour is big enough we might see it fairly often in the season ahead.
