Motherwell have a Winter Break

While others have had the chance to add some points to their tally we have had to endure an unwelcome winter break at a point when our form was on the way up. But the deluge which soaked Lanarkshire in the last fortnight was too much for the ground staff, despite their best efforts.

A soggy Fir Park

The reliability of the pitch has been much improved since the installation of the undersoil heating system in June 2004. We lost a game against Hibs when a fault in the new system failed in January 2005 and the last time we had to postpone because of rain was in January 2004 when a game against
Aberdeen was called off an hour and a half before the scheduled kick off. At least we were able to give sensible notice this time.

We face a busy spell in the weeks ahead. There could be a couple of midweek league games (the St Mirren game has already been pencilled in for Tuesday 20th February) and a full run of Saturday games (assuming we have a Cup quarter final at the end of February!). Any slip up against Morton in a fortnight will not be welcome.

On the bright side, we should be free from short term injuries and we move a closer to the return of Phil O'Donnell. The news during the week that he might be back in claret and amber sometime in February is welcome. Meanwhile the Irish trio will have more time to raise their fitness levels, though they need games to get sharp.

Next week we travel to Easter Road to face a young Hibs team. We know that young teams can suffer from spells of inconsistency so we'll be looking to take something from the capital.
