Motherwell Graduates Play Their Part in Scotland's Win

McFadden, Pearson and McCulloch spent years between them at Fir Park. All three spent their teenage years and more coming through the ranks at Motherwell before moving on to the big stage of the English premiership.

McCulloch was with us from 1995 until he left to join Wigan in 2001. We pocketed £700 000 and Wigan gained a hard working forward. He became their captain and was a major contributor to their journey into the top division.

Pearson grew up in Motherwell and wore claret and amber from 2000 until 2004 when he made what many considered to be an ill judged move to the bench at Parkhead. His old mentor Billy Davies took him to Derby and restored his confidence. His direct running at
defenders through the centre of midfield caused panic in the French rearguard and when he was not attacking he dug in and helped to repel the intense pressure which characterised the match.

And what about Faddy? MacFadden is another product of our youth development production line. Davies started playing him when he was only sixteen and his time at the club lasted from 1999 till 2003. Those of us who were privileged to see him develop through the reserves (where he scored some amazing goals) and mature in the first team know only too well of the talent in his left foot.

It might stick in the throat a wee bit but credit has to be given to another who spent some time at
Fir Park. Alex McLeish has kept the transformation engineered by Walter Smith going and the national team and the double win over France will remain as a testament long after he leaves the hot seat.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the wonderful night and let's hope that we can keep the momentum going for the remaining qualifying games!
