Following our midweek success in Brechin we’ll be hosting United for a chance to reach the semi-finals. We last played them in the League Cup in 1999 when they won 3-2 at Tannadice.
Season tickets should be valid for this match.
The full draw is
Aberdeen v Falkirk
Motherwell v Dundee United
Kilmarnock v Rangers
St Johnstone v Celtic
The tie will take place on Tuesday 26th or Wednesday 27 October. With any luck we’ll have an interest in the semi-final on 1st or 2nd February 2011 and the final at Hampden on Sunday 20 March 2011.
Since we reached the final in 2005 our success in the League Cup has been limited. We lost in the semi-final to Celtic in 2006, then reached the quarters in 2006/7 and 2007/8 when Kilmarnock then Rangers ended our progress. Since then we crumbled in round 3 to Hamilton at home in 2008/9 and last season we lost to St Mirren in round 4.
Motherwell won this trophy for the only time in October 1950. At that time the competition started in a group stage and we moved to the knockouts with five wins from the six games against Airdrie, Hearts and Partick Thistle. Next came a two legged win over Celtic before an exciting semi-final at Ibrox when we came from behind twice to beat Ayr. A convincing 3-0 win over Hibs at Hampden finished with Andy Paton lifting the cup.
