It fell to Jim McMahon to chair the meeting and he started the evening by introducing Stuart McCall for a few remarks. There followed a question and answer session that lasted an hour.
The manager, in his chatty style, expressed his delight at the team earning 47 points from 24 games to date but deflected praise from the audience saying that "plaudits can be handed out at the end of the season". He also revealed that the treatment room was busy and that a few players would have to be nursed through until May. There would be plenty opportunity to field some of the younger members of the squad.
When asked about player turnover in the summer he let it be known that "We'll be looking to extend a few in a few weeks". He also pointed out that the history of some of our former players suggests that the grass is not always greener elsewhere and that a regular place in the first team is better than warming a bench.
Time and again he referred to the disappointment that lingers following our cup exits. The direct effect was to limit the club's ability to invest in the playing staff. At times we are unable to compete in the marketplace with some non-league clubs in England. He felt that the introduction of the playoffs had forced clubs in the bottom six to add players in the winter break and he cited examples.
The meeting returned to the formal agenda and a general discussion started involving Leeann Dempster. The need to increase income whether through the gate, from the SPFL and from transfers is vital. The board has to set the annual budget knowing that too much of a cut would likely guarantee a bottom six finish and therefore assumes a sixth place finish supplemented but cup and possible transfer income.
Several questions from the floor examined the failure of the SPFL to secure a main sponsor. It was made clear that Motherwell were active in pressing the centre for more action and pressing for the balance to switch from administration to commerce.
A need for a fresh look at the strategy for season tickets was recognised. There would be some consultation before decisions were confirmed.
The funeral of Andy Paton took place earlier on Monday and more than 20 former Motherwell players joined the large congregation who paid their respects.
