After the game Maurice Malpas was soon in the press room surrounded by microphones and notepads. He talked for some time about the game and how pleased he was with the young players. He suggested that the end of the season had come at the wrong time for Ross McCormack but hoped he would be able to make a contribution in the future.
He was asked how it felt to read the morning papers that others were being lined up for his job. The reply was to the effect that "you guys make up stories" and that some had not been in touch lately. Then he said, "I've spoken to the new owner and have been told to get a team ready for the start of the new season".
There was a pause while we took in the implications of his statement and after a few more questions it became clear that Malpas and Coakley had chatted by pone "the other night". "It looks as though the deal will go through", he said. "I have had great backing from the current board and I have the backing of the new owner".
So, there seems to be no doubt in the mind of the manager that the sale of the club will go through. We will have a new owner before the start of the season. Given the need for a complete overhaul of the club, a change at the top should be no bad thing.
Whether MM and PH get to complete their close season plans remains to be seen.
