Looking around the country, results were tight and most were favourable to us. Dunfermline and Hibs both lost, while Partick Thistle couldn’t beat Dundee United at home. Dundee and Hearts shared the points, so the only disappointing result was Killie getting a draw against Rangers. And even that was made easier to take since it meant Alex McLeish was dropping points!

We were missing a few players, hence Kevin McDonald made his competitive debut in the middle of the park. His performance was nothing short of sensational and he showed composure worthy of an experienced player. Martyn Corrigan and David Partridge had their work cut out in dealing with large and tricky strikers but stuck to their task well. Both full backs were excellent, and the midfield worked hard all day. Lehmann and McFadden look like a great front pair and complimented each other well.
Perhaps the most heartening thing about the day was our attitude. The players gave everything from the first whistle to the last, and refused to let their heads go down when we were losing 3-0. How often have we seen ‘Well sides give up the ghost or collapse completely in that situation?
The fans also deserve a special mention for their great support. It looked like there was at least 1500 ‘Well fans present, although it’s been suggested the number was nearer 2000. Regardless, they sang, shouted and got right behind the team for all of the ninety minutes. Everyone who was there can be proud of their efforts – we need to keep it up throughout the rest of the season though.
However, there are also some things that need worked on. The first two goals were stupid and down to individual mistakes. Marking at corners needs to be tight and it is possible that TV evidence will make Woods the guilty party for the second. The third goal was probably the most worrying from a long-term perspective – the midfield was non-existent and the defence was pulled apart. It says a lot that Dougie Ramsay was posted missing at his right back slot before appearing on the left trying to make a last gasp saving tackle.
