Kilmarnock went the way of Hibs and Hamilton to lose by the only goal of the game at Fir Park. Killie got all they deserved from the game. We pushed them back for the entire first half and they threatened only after Murphy’s goal. We even got a grudging admission from Jimmy Calderwood, “I think Motherwell probably deserved to nick it."
Brown’s comment after the match that the team don’t know how to lose is a fitting complement. The team hardly need to have their confidence boosted but they are entitled to a slap on the back for their heroics in recent weeks. The hint is that Archie Knox will not allow any hint of complacency to appear.
An inspector calls....
On the down side there has to be some concern about Jutkiewicz and O’Brien. The striker’s knee failed in the first half, did he come back too soon? He missed the last game and it could be that he’ll need some time to recover. To add to our worries the pre-match team news suggested that O’Brien was ill. We have three games in eight days starting with the trip to Perth on Saturday and although we won Saturday’s match we could struggle if both of them are missing for a spell.
The sight of a stranger wandering over the pitch at half time taking pictures of random divots was a reminder that the club is not out of the woods yet as far as the SPL are concerned. The pitch is on extended probation at the moment and the inspector’s conclusion will be awaited with interest. The fact that no fixture is scheduled at Fir Park for a fortnight might tip the balance in our favour.
