It seemed that we might be having a déjà vu experience as we saw the opposition fight to counter our first half lead, equalise in the second then press to snatch the winner. With memories of the Kilmarnock game still fresh, it looked like a re-run. But we turned their attack into a breakaway and scored a breathtaking killer goal.
This attempt from Vigurs was high
Hutchinson launched a clearance from our box and Sutton headed it on from the centre circle. Suddenly we had a chance. Moore headed to Vigurs as Warren realised he had to cover the threat from both players. The pair exchanged passes as the helpless defender looked on before Vigurs shot to the corner of the goal from the edge of the box. The former ICT man celebrated with our small band of supporters behind the goal.
The manager was still caught up in the excitement of the victory when he was debriefed in the post-match conference. Words poured from him and he praised his players. The game plan had worked. A change of shape denied Inverness opportunities and our clinical finishing won the match. Few thought we could come up and win here. He outlined the injuries sustained in the game; Reid’s toe and a scrape on Anier. He deflected talk of the tributes that came his way with the well used line about plaudits waiting until the season’s end but he did acknowledge that it would be a massive achievement to exceed last year’s points’ total.
We can enjoy (for a while at least) the sight of Motherwell holding the best of the rest position but the work of the backroom staff will be important as they strive to ensure that we can start Saturday’s game in Paisley with a fully fit eleven. St Mirren are fighting to avoid the playoffs and another hard game is certain.
