History Beckons

Perhaps our best, and most important run, was in 1932. We were fighting it out for the league title when we went on a superb eleven game winning run. We then drew at Partick Thistle before winning our last two games at home to Cowdenbeath and Thistle. This haul of 27 points from 28 handed us the League Flag.

Contrary to popular belief, Jwok did not witness our last six game winning run
Whilst we didn’t retain the title the next season, we had not one but two good runs in 1932-33. We managed an eight game run before losing to Aberdeen and we also had a six game streak before drawing with Third Lanark.

The following year gave us one of our best ever starts to a league campaign. We won the first nine matches before drawing with Aberdeen. We could not quite keep up the form needed for another title though and we eventually finished second behind Rangers.

The glory years were beginning to fade away but we did manage one more glorious run in 1937. We finished the season with six consecutive wins, the last of which was the 8-0 thrashing of Celtic which remains their record defeat to this day. Celtic broke our run on the opening day of the next season with a draw.

So, Terry Butcher and the players might not be aware of this but they stand on the verge of being the first Motherwell side in nearly 70 years to win six league games in a row (in the top flight at any rate). No pressure then boys!
