A quick look at the record book will reveal that the goal scored by Anier produced a result that was equalled only twice before in this millennium – in 07/08 we beat St Mirren and in 11/12 Inverness were our first day victims. Of course, a winning start doesn’t guarantee a decent season but it is certain to give this new squad a well needed fillip as they discover how best to combine with their new team mates.
Although we didn’t set the heather on fire, there were a few signs that should give us hope for the upcoming games. The defence looked comfortable. In particular, Hutchinson and McManus seem to have formed a formidable pairing while Ramsden looked safe in his rearguard duties – though anything over the halfway line is another matter.
Sutton and McHugh worked hard and there were no surprises with their contribution. Anier made the best of his short time on the pitch and his speed off the mark gave him the opportunity of a debut goal. His composure and fine finish were enough to win the game and earn three points. There’s every prospect of him gaining a starting berth very soon. Vigurs and Lawson continue to impress as they team up with captain Lasley in midfield.
The most pleasing aspect of the game was that we returned to the passing game that has been such a strength of our game in the last few seasons. Players looked confident to receive and distribute the ball and when needed Sutton proved to be a willing runner or target as needed. At the same time we recognise that the winning goal came after a forty yard header from Hutchinson gave Anier something to chase. Delicate passing is pretty but it's goals that win games!
Next up is the trip to Krasnodar and given the two goal deficit, the manager will probably give more weight to Sunday's encounter with Aberdeen. Enjoy the trip!
