The Gorgie locals got very excited when Skacel took to the field after an hour. The stadium announcer was beside himself and it would not have been a surprise if the sound system had stuck up a blast of “See the Conquering Hero Comes”. A chorus did appear but it came two minutes later when the Motherwell support, still celebrating the second goal, started a mocking chant with the substitute’s name.
The win gives us a two point cushion in third place and we can now conclude that we have started the season well. We could not have hoped for a better position after six games and the psychological boost that the squad has earned cannot be underestimated. A peek inside the dressing rooms in Paisley or Perth would reveal very different atmosphere.
We now become a target for the rest and our strengths will not take anyone by surprise. Humphrey’s impressive showing will not have gone unnoticed and defenders will be aware that he can deliver the goods. Blackman gets better and better with every game. Murphy has the ability to run as though the ball is tied to his feet and his knack of gaining possession despite a disadvantage in weight and height. Our midfield works tirelessly and the back line, with or without Hammell, has yet to be beaten away from home.
St Mirren, already at the bottom of the table, come to Fir Park next Saturday. They have a 100% losing record on the road this season and we will be clear favourites to take the points. It will be a good test of our ambition.
