Although there was logic in starting with the same shape and personnel that has success a week ago it was soon apparent that we were second best. Our wide men were unable to prevent repeated attacks on our flanks and our defence struggled to cope with the resultant crossed balls.
60 on the pitch before the game
There was relief in the travelling contingent of 500 that changes were made at the break and for the first minute or two it seemed that an improvement was likely. Surely the addition of Hammel and Ainsworth together with a return to our familiar shape would give us a chance of recovery? Not so. Johnsen was allowed room in the box for a run and leap to head home a well placed corner. Three minutes into the second half the game was over.
Hammell will be embarrassed at replays of the third goal. His decision to allow a falling ball to bounce gave the onrushing Walker the advantage and within seconds of an attacking free kick we were three behind.
Certainly we were unfortunate not to score a consolation or two. Hearts defended well on the line and on another day the margin of their win might have been less but we were never in striking distance of a point.
It was a surprise to discover that we retained our place in the table and the spread of only two points from sixth to twelfth suggests that there will be some interesting twists and turns ahead.
Next up is Celtic...maybe they'll be tired after their exertions at Hampden?
