Hearts 24 Hours On

The annoying thing about matches like this is that whilst we did fairly well it counted for nothing. No more points on the board thanks to that magnificent save by Gordon and any momentum we could take from a good effort will probably be diluted by the international break. Three league defeats on the bounce – regardless of circumstance – will be chipping away at our confidence.

Craig Gordon earned his congratulations
There are a couple of absolute positives we can take from the match though. Firstly, we didn’t get tanked. Given the recent performances of both Hearts and our defence it did not take to much imagination to vision us getting a real hiding. Instead, we emerged with our heads held high. There is also the bonus of keeping up our record of scoring in every game – a much needed confidence boost – but we can also be pleased that we had a very solid defence on the run at the end of the game. Fagan should have scored, Hamilton almost connected properly at the back post and then there was the save at the end. We can still attack and there are few defences in the league that would claim to be confident of a clean sheet against us.

The immediate concern for Butcher will be strengthening the squad before the imminent transfer deadline. He is playing his cards close to his chest but surely there can be little doubt irons will be in the fire somewhere. The next problem is the upcoming fixture – Inverness have been superb for a long spell and getting any kind of result up there will be hard.

It is too early in the season to start worrying but there is also no room for an ‘it’ll all be fine’ attitude either. Teams who struggle frequently play well and lose out to the odd goal and everyone at Fir Park will want to keep up the performance of the last two seasons. Saturday was an improvement – but there is still work to be done.
