Hammell doubtful for U21s

Steven Hammell
Our twenty year old left back completed the game against Aberdeen on Saturday without any obvious problem. Stevie has collected four U21 caps to date and was named in the squad along with Stephen Pearson.

Pearo withdrew from the squad at the beginning of the week, still toiling with the knee injury that he picked up at the Dunfermline game in September.

Hammell has had a remarkably long and consistent spell in the first team since he made the left back position his own as an eighteen year old. Solid and reliable in defence and able to support the forwards when needed, Stevie has become a firm favourite with the East Stand faithful.

He has already appeared in Rainer Bonhof’s team when he was involved in the September double header against Israel and Northern Ireland. He played for ninety minutes in both games.

The SFA report makes no mention of the nature of his “doubtful” status and so it is difficult to speculate about his chances of playing.

The next U21 game following the Iceland tie is a friendly against Ghana in Dumfries on October 14.
