Gretna: 24h On

It is a pity that there are a couple of factors which are taking the shine off such a wonderful season.

A Gretna free kick soars away

The state of the pitch was described by Mark McGhee as an embarrassment. He pointed out after the Gretna game that he had to adjust the tactics to compensate for the bumps and bobbles which would hamper our passing game.

It was evident early in Saturday's game that players from both teams were not comfortable on the dry, bumpy surface. There were three goal attempts in the first half which resulted in throw ins. Neither goalkeeper looked comfortable if they had to cope with anything but the most gentle of pass backs.

We can only hope that new turf beds in soon and that the drier weather gives the ground staff some control over the rest of the surface. Some water then a heavy roller might help in the short term but it would appear that this summer's planned renovation of the pitch will be needed to restore the surface to the required standard.

The recent speculation about McCormack can have done little to lift spirits in the dressing room. Following the loss of our captain and then weeks of forced inactivity due to the waterlogged pitch, the daily debate on the back pages about one of our leading scorer's likely departure would hardly be what our manager would wish. He, too, was caught up in the 'will he, won't he' argument.

Still, Rosco managed to shake off the gossip and his two goals at the weekend remind us that his decision to stay with us at least until the end of the season might be a decisive factor in our fight for a European spot.

There are another two games at Fir Park this week and, bumpy pitch or not, we need to keep the points coming.
