There are merits to having an occasional game under the Friday night floodlights. When the experiment started care was taken to ensure that teams in close proximity were selected and there was a cautious welcome for the idea.
But care for the paying customer has now been abandoned (excepting armchair football fans who subscribe to BT Sports). Once again supporters who attend matches have plans disrupted as three games are moved with onlt several weeks' notice.
Gone is the notion that local teams meet on the workday evening and we are faced with the prospect of some of the longest matchday journeys having to take place on a Friday.
The games and journeys involved are
Aberdeen v Motherwell (from Saturday 25 October to Friday 24 October)
St Johnstone v Motherwell (from Saturday 1 November to Friday 31 October)
Motherwell v Dundee United (from Saturday 8 November to Friday 7 November)
Those changes will have fans travelling 150 miles, 63 miles and 84 miles each way to follow their team. So much for encouraging away fans.
Grrrr!
The irony is that today Motherwell have announced the launch of 5 and 10 game passes to home games. This is a welcome innovation to give supporters more flexibility and further encouragement to come to Fir Park. This move sanctioned by the SPFL seems certain to place barriers to attendance.
Poor stuff!
