Five Games to Go

Last updated : 17 April 2005 By Firparkcorner

Let’s be clear from the outset that this discussion is taking place at the end of a very successful season. Regardless of the number of points gained in the remaining matches we can congratulate everyone associated with the football side of the club with the season’s work. The SPL form has been superb and the CIS adventure was a bonus.

Two seasons ago we managed to collect a measly total of twenty eight points and many felt that last year’s total of forty six was beyond us this time round. It speaks volumes for the growing maturity of the squad that we have been in the top half for most of this campaign but there are another fifteen points still up for grabs. How many can we win?

Motherwell v Aberdeen

It could be that next week’s fixture offers the best chance of three points. Honours are even so far with each team having a win, a draw and a defeat. The last encounter at Pittodrie will still be fresh in the memories of both sets of players and the Dons will be keen for revenge. They will know that a defeat will probably end their hopes of a European place but we will probably be favourites to take the three points.

Hearts v Motherwell

How good would a win be here! The Jam Tarts have been humbled by the Mighty ‘Well four times already this season and the thought that we could make it five has Motherwell fans anticipating the clean sweep. Hearts are five points ahead of us at the moment and full points will be needed if we are to overtake them.

Motherwell v Hibernian

We have managed only one point against the Hibees this term and we can only hope that our home advantage tips the balance in our favour. Given that Livingston managed to take three goals from Hibs this weekend we should not go into this game with anything to fear.

Rangers v Motherwell

The last two games of the season could see Motherwell act as kingmakers. Our record against the team from Govan is not good. In the four meetings this season the aggregate is 14-4. On a positive slant, we have managed to sore in three of the encounters. The home team will be hot favourites and the best realistic hope will be that we leave Ibrox pleased with our performance.

Motherwell v Celtic

The final game could see the visitors from Parkhead needing three points to win the title. Despite their three wins against us this season the idea of having to come to Fir Park to seal the championship will not be appealing. The last time they played in Motherwell they won by the odd goal in five and many felt that a draw would have been a fair result.

It would wonderful to finish the season with a win!
