The exhibition is in Hamilton
Until the end of October there is an exhibition that “takes a fond look at Lanarkshire’s football heritage through the careers of some of our local heroes, with photos, footage and memorabilia”.

The newly refurbished museum, just opposite the Esporta complex beside the Palace Grounds, is an ideal place to host this display of some of Lanarkshire’s finest football talent.

There is a mixture of displays, posters and video all held together with clear annotation. Many trophies including the impressive Lanarkshire Cup are on show together with traditional football boots – wooden studs and all!

A local history of the development of the game gives rise to an examination of Motherwell, Hamilton, Albion Rovers and Airdrie football clubs. The Mighty ‘Well section has a few gems on show. Many are on loan from Keith Brown’s collection and the pick of the bunch is probably a Motherwell jersey dating from the 1920s.

Some of the 'Well memorabilia
Plenty of space is devoted to those Lanarkshire men who have stamped their mark on the national game both as players and managers. The McLeans of Ashgill, Busby, Pettigrew, Cooper, the list goes on.

One of the many rolling video clips will fascinate ‘Well fans. It consists of four minutes of silent, black and white film of a Motherwell v Hamilton match that took place in 1925. A full house turned out and every one in the crowd wore the mandatory cloth cap. It is evident that the local derby held a great deal of interest all these years ago and it demonstrates how much Lanarkshire has lost as these events have largely disappeared for present day fans.

Entry to the museum is free and the exhibition is highly recommended visit. There is plenty of time to plan your visit as it runs through the summer closing at the end of October.

‘Well Worth the Visit!
