Falkirk - 24h On

We've seen it all too often. Motherwell produce a nice bit of form then managed to lose to a team that can't buy a win. Falkirk had earned only one point from their last five games and had yet to record a home win this season. Then we turned up.

Still, we knew it couldn't last. Our early season play has been a joy and we are in a must better position after the opening seven games than we were last year. At that time we were bottom and trailing Dunfermline by two points.

The atmosphere at the Falkirk Stadium has little hope of reaching fever pitch because of the two open sides but on Saturday the crowd of more than 5000 were particularly quiet. Is it possible that the team could have been shaken from the lethargic second half performance if the travelling fans had been able to give more vocal support?

Any review of the game must make reference to the background at the opposite end of the park from the away stand. The huge advertising hoarding extends to the full width of the pitch and is far higher than the crossbar. But it is mostly white and the outline of the goal is lost. It must be a distraction for the players but it is no help to the fans either. The SFA and the SPL should insist that a contrasting colour is chosen.

How will the team react to the loss? They were praised for their attitude following the defeats against Hearts and Kilmarnock but they know that they did not live up to expectations at the weekend. They will have an early chance to make amends at the Wednesday CIS cup game before returning to Fir Park to face Rangers next Saturday.
