Fair Play hope for Motherwell

Last updated : 08 May 2009 By Firparkcorner

Many Motherwell fans still retain fond memories of last September's trip to Nancy and hopes are high that we might be offered the chance to enter the new competition even if it is due to the good behaviour of players, officials and fans rather than last season's silky football.

The main basis of the standings depend on the number of yellow and red cards collected by the team throughout the season but the SFA's Fair Play Assessments are also influenced by the Referee Supervisors' reports.

The best indication we have at the moment seems to be a table produced by ESPN (!) and it shows Motherwell in second place behind Celtic. As they have secured a European place already the chance of a back door entry to the Europa League becomes a real possibility.

However, as the BBC reports Hibs are in contention, it is clearly not just as simple as red and yellow cards. Everyone needs to play nice in the coming weeks!

If we are awarded the place then we would enter the new competition in the first of four preliminary rounds. There will be 50 teams in the first round and a seeded draw will be held to determine the ties. Wikipedia has an excellent page devoted to the 2009/10 competition.

Many summer holiday plans could suffer late alterations if we succeed. The four qualifying rounds will be complete by the end of August.

The dates are

First qualifying round: July 2, 2009 July 9, 2009

Second qualifying round: July 16, 2009 July 23, 2009

Third qualifying round: July 30, 2009 August 6, 2009

Play-off round: August 20, 2009 August 27, 2009
