Dunfermline Preview

In a way, this Motherwell-Dunfermline game sums up the change in the game. Before the Taylor Report, both clubs took a reasonable amount of fans to the away fixture and both teams would go out looking for a win. Nowadays there probably won’t even be 300 visiting fans at Fir Park this Saturday and Dunfermline will be over the moon if they can sit in for a point. Such is progress…

Anyway, it is down to us to break down Dunfermline this weekend. We should certainly be able to find the net if last week is anything to go by. The injury to Scott Leitch means that Brian Kerr will get a start – a move which may well have been made anyway given that he is a bit more creative than our captain. Jim Hamilton and Scott McDonald both played very well last week and scored goals. They can both hold the ball up well and between them they offer a good combination of height and pace.
Alan McCormack made an outstanding debut on the right wing against Celtic but he needs to keep his game at that level of performance even against less glamorous opposition. He played a part in two of our goals last week and his contribution down the right will be vital to get us three points this time.
Dunfermline had a poor season last year and it took the return of Jim Leishman to save them from relegation. They took a great point at Easter Road last week but it seemed as if they still lacked a threat in front of goal. To solve this they have just signed a Polish striker – whose name I’m not even going to try and mention – who will be in the squad for Saturday. He is 6’4’’ so there is probably not much guessing to be done in figuring out how they will try to play against us when he is on the park.
We have a great recent record against Dunfermline at Fir Park and anything other than a win will be a disappointment. It might not be pretty and we might leave it late but we’ll sneak it 2-1.
