One of our best periods of play this season was the thirty-five minute demolition of Dundee United at Fir Park. For that spell we were brilliant and the United defence simply couldn’t cope with us. However, in the first half we did not perform at all and it took a shocking miss from McIntyre at the start of the second period to keep our hopes alive. United have some good players and their position near the bottom of the league does not reflect a true position for them. If we do not play to our full potential on Saturday, we will return with no points.
Terry Butcher has a tricky decision to make. We have not been playing nearly as well as our recent results suggest. Despite his energetic bursts, it might be time to give Fitzpatrick a rest in favour of a more seasoned midfielder. Alternatively, Butcher may feel that the return of Kevin McBride might give us something extra and bring him back into the side. The final decision is the formation – we have been winning with our 4-3-3/4-5-1 combination but the performances are not as strong as they were with a 4-4-2. Does he keep with more of the same or return to the previous method?
I have no idea what the answers to those questions are but that is why Terry is the manager and I’m merely writing about it! But it is fair to say that getting the answers to those questions correct will give us another three points but getting them wrong will end our good run of form.
Dundee United won their crucial six pointer against Livingston at Tannadice but their other recent games have only yielded one point from Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen.
