Given our recent form the win against the leaders was not one that many of the home crowd expected but the mixture of steely grit and the odd phase of pleasing football earned its reward. Saturday’s results shuffled the leading positions and so we’ll face the latest team to top the table when we travel to Inverness in a fortnight.
It’s possible that we’ll be under new management by then so it is appropriate to acknowledge the work undertaken by Kenny Black and his team in steering the players through a hard week. When the shock of McCall’s departure had eased it became clear that the manner of his going only raised the esteem with which he is regarded by the overwhelming majority of Motherwell fans.
His radio interview and the sentiments expressed in the match-day programme delivered comfort that he left for, as he saw it, the best interests of the club. For that and for the achievements prominently displayed in the East Stand at the start of the match he has our grateful thanks.
For now the Friday night experience is over and we can look forward to the next six games (5 in the league and one in the cup) returning to 3pm on a Saturday. The triple whammy that BT Sport imposed still irks and we have to hope that they take heed of the inconvenience imposed on travelling fans in future (though they have not yet replied to my complaint!).
The players are due a few days off before they return to concentrate of the ICT game. With any luck we’ll have close to a full squad available. Whoever is in charge for that match will have a group of players that have shown they have the ability to take on the best in the league and succeed. That should give us some hope that the tide is beginning to turn. Onwards and upwards!
