A vital milestone in Motherwell's season was reached on Saturday when the win over Dundee removed any lingering doubt about our top flight status. We can enjoy the remaining three fixtures and focus on the trip to Hampden on May 19.
The second half showing tipped the game in our favour and we earned our fourth win over the Dens Park side this season. An extra thrill comes when a win comes despite the loss of the opening goal. The crowd responded to the players' extra efforts and with the added treat of a first goal from Kipré there was a special cheer when the winner hit the net.
Dunne rises to set up the first goal
The Frenchman has come a long way since he first appeared in claret and amber as a trialist in our first pre-season game at Forthbank. The decision offer then extend his contract has paid big dividends as the 21 year old has now become a fixture in the team. The unbridled joy that erupted as he celebrated his scoring header was a measure of the crowd’s affection for the big defender.
There was also a hearty round of applause for Bowman when he was substituted in the 40th minute. Throughout the season he has been seen as second fiddle to Moult then Main but his commitment to the team is evident in every game.
Say farewell to the old scoreboard
Grimshaw has grabbed his opportunity to shine since returning to regular action. His four appearances in April alongside Campbell have strengthened our terrier tactics in midfield and he will be looking for a starting place at Hampden.
Of the three remaining league fixtures, St Johnstone (h), Partick Thistle (a) and Hamilton (h) the first gives an opportunity to own seventh place. A win over the Perth Saints would give us a six point advantage with the benefit of a big goal difference. With the best of the rest position comes a financial bonus that will give a little more flexibility to next season’s football budget.
The team has delivered two national finals and ensured league safety with room to spare. Whatever the outcome at the cup final we will be able to look back at 2017/18 as a successful season.
