The last day of January 2017 may prove to be the turning point of Motherwell’s season. Success on and off the park gives us reason to go forward with confidence.
The win in Dingwall will give all at Fir Park a much needed lift after the disappointing first two games of 2017. The club had rebuffed approaches for the goal scoring duo as the team were preparing for the match but McDonald and Moult, to their credit, were able to dismiss distracting thoughts and give their all for the cause.
Praise is also due to the decision makers at MFC . The club has to balance the need to generate income from player sales against the debt repayment schedule and with an eye to the longer term, the choice to bolster our top flight survival was the right one.
But the team is more that the regular goal scorers. Samson produced a handful of saves to thwart Ross County and we were able to give a debut to Jules in the closing stages.
The January window has closed and we have an enlarged squad. Brill and Laing have left while Griffiths (goalkeeper), Jules (defender) and Frear (winger) have arrived. Pearson is expected to return for his third spell soon. As a free agent the deadline does not apply.
Another early kick-off arrives on Saturday (1215) when a much changed Hearts squad will provide the opposition. A ‘Well win would put us in a good position as we enter the last third ahead of the split.
