Davie Cooper 'Well Shirt
Last updated : 09 October 2005 By Firparkcorner
The jersey is being donated by a football fan (Steve) in support of the Motor Neuron Disease Association. His friend, Graeme, was diagnosed with this muscle-wasting condition a year ago. A Race Night has been organised in Aberdeen at the end of October and the jersey has been donated to swell the funds.
In the mid-nineties Steve’s neighbour was Malcolm (Malky) Thomson, an ex-Aberdeen player, who was a youth team coach at Fir Park. One day Malky came home with three kit bags from the youth team’s trip to Ireland. The training jerseys within were original Motherwell FC tops from a few seasons earlier. Malky asked if Steve would like one as a memento and, as Davie Cooper had just tragically passed away, he couldn’t let such an opportunity pass. Only one number eleven jersey remained in the three kit bags and he was delighted to have it. Malky gifted him the top and it has been treasured it ever since.
The jersey was made by ‘ADMIRAL’, and is the Ian Skelly sponsored version of the type worn in the 1991 cup run. Malky is now assistant manager at Inverness and he is happy to provide written authentication of the shirt.
The auction will take place on Ebay starting on Sunday (9 October @ 8pm) and it will run for a week.
