Despite the odd fright with the occasional relegation dogfight, Motherwell is in the happy position of viewing the proposal from the lofty heights of the SPL. So, what are the proposals?
The most dramatic change, if the scheme goes ahead, would be the introduction of a playoff system between the team finishing in eleventh place with teams in positions two, three and four in the SFL top division.
While this would create a tense climax to the season it is hardly a prospect which is likely to attract any of the teams that normally inhabit the bottom half of the table. The notion of turkeys agreeing to the possibility of a second Christmas is fanciful.
The other ideas in the discussion may find more support. A three thousand seat ground capacity with modern infrastructure is a realistic standard for Division 1 stadia. The geographical restrictions suggested for Division 3 are also sensible.
The most radical component of the paper is to open the senior game up to new members by a playoff system into Division 3. The prospect of some of big Junior teams having the opportunity to progress up the leagues has to be welcomed.
All of this will be subject to the views of the SPL, SFA and the SJFA as well as the SFL. Perhaps the most important proposal is missing from the current discussion document – there is no suggestion that the various bodies combine to create one body with the power to oversee all of Scottish football.
