The new Uefa president has promised to spice up the competition and as a result the notion of promoting the SFA Cup Winners has been proposed. It would be at the cost of the position granted to the team which finishes second in the SPL.
The idea that entry to the top club competition could be a prize would provide boost to the Cup competition and almost certainly ensure that teams other than the old firm got an occasional chance to dip into the prize money usually reserved for the big guns.
Les Gold was quick off the mark with his comment that, "We would not want to see that happen at the expense of the SPL runners-up and are making representations."
The vested interest of the big
The SPL will argue that a dilution of their representation in terms of qualification places would reduce the stature of the league. But all the SPL teams are members of the SFA and they must see that the added stature the proposed change would give to the national cup competition is a prize worth having.
Let's go for it!
