Celtic(h) Preview

2-3 in October
At the start of the campaign the fans, players and management at Fir Park would have been delighted at the prospect of another top six finish and a CIS final appearance. The budget was set on the assumption of a final place near the bottom of the table and the financial reward gained from the current success should do much to keep us in the black for another year.

It should not be a surprise therefore, to see the home crowd cheer their claret and amber heroes regardless of the result. The bookmakers odds of around 16/1 on a Motherwell win seem more to reflect the importance of the game to the visitors than offer a realistic reflection of the two horse race. Yet there is no doubt that Celtic deserve to be favourites.

Motherwell’s injury list hardly deserves repeating save to say that we will be fielding a weakened team. Some semblance of normality may be restored to our back four with the return of Craigan but, alas, he could well be the only regular in our rearguard. We lost by the odd goal in five the last time the teams met at Fir Park in October – and we had a few injuries that time too! (

Celtic will not have the advantage of wide open spaces and much of the game may be forced into the centre of the park. Our lads will savour the chance to make the headlines and ruin any premature celebrations. McDonald will fancy his chances of finding the net and at the other end Marshall has recovered form after his blip of a few weeks ago.

If we can escape the loss of an early goal it may be possible that a surprise could be in store. We will have to press, harry , chase and ride our luck to take anything from the match.

We will give our guys a warm send off after the final whistle and wish them well as they take a well earned summer break. All too soon we’ll be following them to the pre season fixtures. But it’s unlikely that we’ll upset the planned celebration, the prediction of a 1-3 defeat could be correct.
