Celtic -- 24h on

Those involved deserved whatever celebrations they had on Saturday night and however long they need to recover from them early in the week.

But one win, no matter how historic, is just one win.  And there is the danger that such a victory can distract from the games ahead; should we lose to Dundee United on Boxing Day we will be, in the short-term at least, no further forward.

That game at Tannadice gives us an early chance to ensure we do not finish bottom, if not secure our top flight status.  A win there would put us 14 points clear of bottom, a margin which – surely – will prove decisive.  It will not be easy though, no matter how poor United are presently.  They are in the last chance saloon on Boxing Day and will be all too aware of the fact.

Regardless of how that goes, guaranteeing we finish ahead of someone else to avoid the necessity of another play-off is a another challenge.  Killie would currently seem favourites for that role as Partick Thistle have been impressive recently but we should focus on ourselves rather than others.

Long-term there are signs that under Mark McGhee we could be heading in the right direction.  At times against both Hearts and Dundee we played with verve and skill, and against Celtic we not only broke with conviction, we defend calmly and resolutely.

McGhee may not be everyone’s cup of tea but the one way he can win over the doubters is with results on the park.   And so far, in his return, he is certainly doing that.
