There was some impressive play in the first half topped off with a couple of well taken goals. Celtic ruled the second period that included a bizarre three minute three goal spell and a late late winner. It was compulsive viewing.
The first half goals were beauties. The long pass from McManus found Moult on the 18 yard line and his lobbed volley left Gordon stranded helplessly on the six yard line as the ball found the net. It was an outstanding start and a perfect confidence booster. MacLean showed determination to rob Lustig before placing a perfect cross for Moult to convert for his second. It was not the start anyone anticipated.
Our undoing was the inability to adjust to the change in formation we faced in the second half. Celtic dominated the midfield and we fell back in deep defence. There was little chance of us holding out against the onslaught that followed.
The end was a disappointment to what might have been a glorious afternoon. We can only guess at the atmosphere in the home dressing room after the final whistle, it was bad enough in the home stands.
The crowd of only 8,535 showed an embarrassing number of empty seats in the Cooper and Hunter stands. The club is working hard to build up the home support but it must be disheartening to see barely 3,000 Motherwell fans turn out to support the team. Let's hope for a bigger turnout when Kilmarnock visit next weekend.
