The late stunning goal against Hearts will live long in the collective memory of Motherwell fans.  Carl McHugh now joins the elite group of players that had us dancing in the aisles.

These are goals that fly to the top of the list when we are asked about our memorable moments.  Others are just as important but this special group will grace the video reels for years to come.

Let’s start with McHugh’s spectacular.  The game seemed to be heading for a replay but as the clock moved to 87 minutes Frear crossed the ball into the box.  After a touch from Hughes, Berra headed high and central.  Our man saw his chance, charged forward taking the ball high on his chest and volleyed to the top left corner with his right foot.  The ‘keeper got the slightest of touches as the ball thundered into the net.  The goal put us into the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

Jim Hamilton’s strike against Celtic in 2006 came in a 2-1 loss at Fir Park but it has the distinction of being the SPFL goal of the decade.  Kerr delivered a sweeping cross from the right wing to Hamilton.  He had to retreat back over the 18 yard line to get set before making a perfect contact with a volley that gave Boruc no chance.  The technique on show was of the highest order.

Marc Fitzpatrick’s goal was not the most spectacular but it sent us into the 2005 League Cup final.  The semi-final against Hearts took place at Easter Road and with extra-time almost over the dread of a penalty shootout loomed.  Fitzpatrick was a teenage substitute and he charged into the box to score  in front of the ‘Well fans in the South stand.

Colin O’Neill blasted home from 35 yards in the Scottish Cup semi-final replay against Celtic in 1991.  His rocket gave us the lead and we were on the way to lift the old trophy for the second time.  Kirk supplied the pass before the thunderbolt that had Bonner grasping fresh air.

Another semi-final gem came from the foot of Louis Moult.  His majestic lob at Hampden was his second of the match and led to a 2-0 defeat of Rangers in October 2017.    A close contender to this goal was his lobbed volley against Celtic earlier in the season.

There are several other contenders -  Jutkiewicz against Hibs in the 6-6 game, McDonald n helicopter Sunday and many more.
