‘They are contracted to us and they must remember that’ was a thinly veiled shot at James McFadden who has suggested that he will not want to play First Division football next season. While ‘Well fans will understand McFadden leaving, particularly if we go down, it would be a shame for memories of him to be tainted by an acrimonious departure.
Stevie Hammell has publicly said that he would be happy to stay as long as the club do not want to sell him. However, he also mentioned that he only has another year left on his contract – just like Stuart Elliott last year, the club may be forced to cash in on Hammell if he does not accept an extended deal.
The final player who is likely to attract attention from bigger clubs is Stephen Pearson. Rumours about him have been thin on the ground recently though and his inconsistent performances may prevent clubs from making a bid.
Butcher also re-emphasised that there was no need for a fire sale at Fir Park. The club has been trading at a profit for sometime and the money brought in by the Scottish Cup run will keep the wolves from the door for a while.
Butcher is aware that along with trying to keep players, he will need to strengthen the side for next season. This is obviously impossible until Friday but there has been some good news with Craig, DuBourdeau and McDonald all signing new deals.
