Britton's In Good Company

Mickey Weir – the ex-Hibee was a very annoying opponent for us for many years. He scored quite a few against us and his diminutive stature betrayed a player who was very skilful. His signing was met with incredulity by many but it proved to be a good move by Alex McLeish. He scored a few useful goals including a peach against Raith Rovers and opened the scoring against Dunfermline when we avoided the play offs on the last day. He also tapped in to seal a rare win at Parkhead after the scoring had been opened by…

Owen Coyle. Anyone who has already achieved legendary status with Airdrie when they sign for Motherwell is bound to be viewed with suspicion. However, there is nothing better to win over sceptical fans than scoring buckets of goals. Penalties, headers, tap-ins, belters and scoring against the Old Firm all helped make Owen a favoured player amongst the fans. This changed though after he fell out with management and was abruptly sold on the eve of a cup quarter final. Coyle has never stayed for more than a few years at any club and despite scoring notable goals for ourselves, Bolton and Dundee United, his heart is most at home at New Broomfield where, predictably, he is still scoring.

An interesting conversation...
And finally we have Andy Goram. A brilliant goalkeeper, possibly the best ever produced by Scotland, but what a lot of baggage he had. Along with being a Rangers legend, there was controversy over his relationship with undesirable elements and finally, he might just be past it. He did make some mistakes for us and over the piece he probably wasn’t worth all the money we shelled out on him. But, when he was still on form, what a player he was. He had an uncanny knack of knowing when the ball was sailing inches wide and then there were some breathtaking performances which won us points almost single-handedly.

So, whilst some of our fans may not be 100% convinced about the wisdom of signing Gerry Britton, this has happened before. If he can score as many goals as Mickey Weir between now and the end of the season, he may even earn a new deal for next year!
