Boyle Gets it Right

Let’s start by looking at what Boyle said,

'If Celtic win the league on the final day of the season at
Fir Park we'll make arrangements so Motherwell fans can leave and they will be entitled to their hour in the sunshine.

'It's the right thing to do and it'd be the same whether it was Rangers, Hearts or whoever had the chance to win the league at our ground.

'It's been a long, hard season and if after 38 games Celtic are the champions, they deserve the right to pick up the trophy on the day they win the league, regardless of where that may be. It would be childish for us to deny them that opportunity so we'll make appropriate security arrangements. There might be a delay to allow our fans to exit but they'll be allowed their celebrations.'

What’s the problem? ‘Well fans will have a chance to show appreciation to the Motherwell team for another unbelievable season. Indeed, if the extra security at the stadium ensures that our team can stay on the park to take the home crowd’s applause instead of having to rush up the tunnel to avoid the pitch invasion than all the better.

We can then leave and let the presentation take place. Any team that wins the league, especially on the last game of the season, should be presented with the trophy immediately.

After all, no matter how passionate we feel about our football, this is a sporting event, nothing more.

None of the argument above suggests that we should do anything but try to win the fixture, regardless of its importance in deciding the destination of the championship.

We should be big enough to congratulate whatever team which wins the title and resist the temptation to act as party poopers.
