Hard to believe but Motherwell truly were third favourites for a League title at one point during the years covered inside (from '95 to '98) but we had a secret weapon capable of dashing every hope. That weapon was the gingerness that is CleishyMac and he lived up to his name of “Scotland's brightest young manager” by proving the mathematical equation that the more money you spend the less points you gather. By the time the book ends Motherwell were so desperate to get rid of the stench of ginger that they had employed a manager that could barely speak English, no, not Charlie Nicholas.
One Step Beyond the no too bad Motherwell fanzine type erm fanzine had to embrace new technology and had a new Editor to bring it into the space age. Simply cutting and pasting would not be enough to hold onto the readers and Matt would take the helm, get a new computer and then find it promptly broken by an unlikely source. Despite this the fanzine continued, and still does to this day, with many favourite regular articles getting an airing from these early editions.
Matt would also take some tentative steps into the world of the media. He may claim not to crave the limelight but it won't stop him getting in front of the TV cameras or radio mics given half a chance. (This comment towards the kettle comes from its good friend the pot). Sadly for Matt he would also find out that all that glistens is, indeed, not gold as tabloid ‘fame' beckons.
Family life sees Matt become a married man, move into Number 9 and expand his family further. Just how do you follow up a name like Amber and keep it Motherwell related?
If you've read any of the previous books in the series then you know what to expect by now. And if you haven't then where have you been? Matt brings us through three more seasons of highs and, mainly, lows in typical fashion. One Step Beyond is a great toilet read so can I just suggest that this book, its grown up big brother, can also claim similar, ahem, glory, and will see the reader through many a difficult straining eggbound moment. It worked for me…
