It is difficult to figure out how we might get the victory. We squander the few chances we make and our defending has been reminiscent of schoolboy footy in recent weeks. A vast improvement is needed at both ends of the pitch if we are to win tonight or any time soon. It is obvious that in our situation the league is more important but a good cup win could act as a springboard.
Aberdeen are also in dire need of a win. Despite starting the season as favourites to finish third, they have been inconsistent so far. Discounting the disastrous 7-0 thrashing at Celtic Park, Aberdeen’s last two games were both at Pittodrie and they failed to score while only registering a single point from the visits of Dundee and Hibs. It is likely that Aberdeen were still suffering the effects of the virus which caused the postponement of our game last week when they were at Parkhead but it must be assumed they are now fit and desperate to regain some dignity.
Terry Butcher made several dramatic changes to the team on Saturday and it is likely that he will do so again. David Partridge is back from suspension and looks certain to start while Daniel Sengewald is the favourite to drop out of the defence. Keith Lasley and Dirk Lehmann were both on the bench at Firhill and both will be in contention for recalls. Scott Leitch is suspended for the next three league games but is available for this competition. Whether his performances justify him keeping his place is another matter. The front pair could be interesting with a Fir Park source suggesting that James McFadden may be rested to protect a hamstring tweaked against Thistle.
The Dons might be missing first choice ‘keeper Peter Kjaer and the strain put on David Preece’s back at the weekend might force him out as well. We have had the upper hand over Aberdeen in the League Cup but they have edged the games at Pittodrie by five to three. Will we close the gap? Why not? We need to be positive – after a 2-2 draw we’ll triumph 5-3 on penalties.
