The view of the winning strike from the Cooper Stand was perfect. The ball flew into the top left corner and gave Brown no chance. Motherwell fans were on their feet as the ball struck the net and the boys in the East Stand were treated to the acting captain’s celebrations. Hammell last scored in the opening game of the season against Inverness.
Adam Cummins - a fine debut
We spurned a few opportunities to extend the lead and had to survive a number of threats from an increasingly desperate Aberdeen attack. That they escaped with only four yellow cards was surprising.
At times our defence was heroic. It was especially pleasing to see Carswell, Page and Cummins holding their own in a frantic first team game. The manager was fulsome in his praise “I thought to a man there were some outstanding performances.” He also acknowledged the importance of the win. It maintains our eleven point buffer over the chasing pack and as a bonus we share second spot.
The one disappointment was the size of the crowd. It was 3,000 less than that which watched the cup tie a week earlier. But last week the Dons’ fans were charged £15, this time the gate price was £22. There were other factors too but surely the price was a significant factor?
We have a trip to Kilmarnock next week - only three games left before the split. This season's meetings with Killie have both ended in goalless draws. Can we break our duck on Saturday?
