To his credit Stuart McCall put on a brave face in his post match interviews and took comfort from the way his team played for much of the game. He admitted disappointment at the loss of two late goals but stressed that he was pleased with the overall performance. His professionalism shone through as he must have been seething inside.
Still, let’s take on his theme and look on the bright side. We’re a point clear at the top of the league, we’ve scored 13 goals from our seven league games and we have the highest scoring striker in Scottish football – oh, and we’re still unbeaten. Not bad for a team that had to be reorganised following the close season loss of Craigan, Jennings and Clancy.
Craig Brown chipped in with a few favourable views, “Anyone can finish near the top and Motherwell are deservedly where they are. They are the best team we've played this season and they proved that today. Motherwell were the better team and we were fortunate to get a home draw."
The players will hurt at the ‘loss’ of two points but if a lesson can be learned about defending a lead in the closing minutes then all will not have been lost. The management team will make sure that spirits are raised tomorrow as they focus on the League Cup trip to Ibrox on Wednesday.
Stay at home fans will be able to watch a second consecutive Motherwell away game from the comfort of their armchairs. A bizarre result of Rangers’ troubles is that $ky and E$PN have to select many more games that feature neither of the Glasgow teams. When was the last time that Aberdeen v Motherwell received live coverage?
Wednesday’s game has a 7.15pm kick off time courtesy of the BBC scheduler and it will be fascinating to see how we face up to the challenge. A win will see us in the quarter finals but regardless, we’ll take a decent cheque for our efforts. Some will argue it’s a win-win affair.
