A Look at 2005

The first foots at Fir Park on Monday are Aberdeen and if we win that, we will move within two points of them in fourth place. More importantly, we are currently on 29 points – a massive total for our club at this time of the season – and it will surely only take another couple of wins and draws from the thirteen games before the split to confirm our top six place.

We have only achieved five top half finishes since the modern Premier League was formed and only once have we done so in consecutive seasons. Whilst this may not be an achievement to rival Rangers’ fifty league titles, for our club it will give us something to reflect on with pride. It will also surely cement Terry Butcher’s status as the best Motherwell manager in recent years.

But, as Chris Tarrant may annoyingly crone, we don’t want to settle for that. Oh no, there could be some serious glory around the corner. We are still in the Scottish Cup ( okay, it hasn’t started yet!) – but we have a winnable third round tie. More importantly, should we progress, we will be in a fourth round draw wihich will be without at least three SPL teams, one of them being half of the Old Firm. That means that for one lucky side, a place in the Cup final is there for the taking without dueling either of the gruesome pair. It probably won’t be us. But it could be…

However, a more realistic chance of a shiny pot could come in the League Cup. For the first time in eons, we have reached the semi final of this competition. We have only won it once and with a stuttering Hearts side waiting for us at Easter Road in the semi, a place in the final is very much a possibility. We have beaten them twice this season without conceding a goal. Will the pattern continue or will the roles be reversed? I’m looking forward to finding out!

We have a team which is capable of playing some very good football but also able to grind out results. We have several youngsters looking good in the first team and they are all tied up on long(ish) contracts.

Can life get any better? We’ll know after the League Cup final!
