MIGHTY DIAMONDS
On the wet 'n dreary night that was 30.1.90, 2 of the GLP backroom squad managed to wangle a night off the old babysitting, and ventured to the other side of darkest Lanarkshire to Check out the "Only the Lonleys" (is Airdrie) on their own sticky turf.
The Diamonds started well enough, with Alan Lawrence and Steve Gray showing some nice touches, although after 15 mins or so Clydebank (the opposition) fought to gain the upper hand with some determined team work. Steve Gray gave the Bankies the lead with a bizarre own goal, and Owen Coyle made it 2 ten minutes before half time with an excellent chip over the advancing Martin. The Diamonds looked well and truly outof it.
The home side showed some great fighting qualities after the re—start, and Bankies cracked under the pressure when Rowe nodded a cracker into his own net after a McDonald cross, Then Ewan Balfour levelled with 10 mins to go with a well taken header. It must be said, though, that Airdrie looked absolutely panic striken attimes in front of goal, and very vulnerable on the break. They would also have to bolster a poorish midfield, and issue Martin with a cattle—prod to keep sleepy Tam McAdam & co on their toes if they do "come up".
Best for Airdrie by miles, was Steve Gray, who battled constantly on the wing, even though the service given to him on occasions was disgraceful (misplaced rocket passes etc..). Alan Lawrence laboured a bit on the sticky pitch, but still looks a magnificent buy. BUT, GLF's coveted "man of the match" award goes to Clydebank' Owen Coyle, who, despite the horrendous disadvantage of playing alongside the loathsome Ken Eadie, showed that he IS Premier League material.
So, how about Coyle for the Steelmen? Anyway, agood night out was had by all, andgood luck to Airdrie in their bid to join the Well in the top 10.
